What Should I Avoid in My Questions?
You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems you face. To maintain the usefulness of this community, avoid questions that are:
- Overly Subjective: For example, “What’s your favorite ______?”
- Already Answered: When you provide your answer in the question and expect others to add theirs: “I use ______ for ______, what do you use?”
- Not Problem-Solving: Like “I’m curious if other people feel like I do.”
- Open-Ended and Hypothetical: Such as “What if ______ happened?”
- Rants in Disguise: Questions like “______ sucks, am I right?”
If your motivation for asking a question is “I’d like to participate in a discussion about ______,” consider using our mailing lists instead. However, if your goal is “I’d like others to explain ______ to me,” then you’re likely in the right place.
Guidelines for Answers:
- Do Not Expand Questions in Answers: Edit the question or add a comment instead.
- Avoid Commenting on Other Answers in Your Answer: Use the comment section for this purpose.
- Do Not Just Link to Other Questions: Mention "Possible duplicate of..." in the comments if needed.
- Provide Descriptive Solutions: Links are welcome but should complement your answer by referring to sources or additional reading. Include the solution text even if it’s a copy-paste.
